EHSA President’s Message: Save the Date for Our 200th Anniversary Gala on October 1st

There comes a time when you have to get back on the horse and start riding again despite having been thrown for loop previously. Unfortunately, many of us have experienced a loss of something or someone in last COVID year plus. With grit and determination, many English Alumni will stay the course. Why? One reason is so we can appear in-person at our 200th Anniversary Gala on October 1st at the Marriott Copley, Boston.

This is great news but what does that mean for you? It means your English High School Alumni Association is here to stay.  EHSA is as strong as ever and already finalizing our elegant plans for celebrating with your classmates, family and friends 200 years of educating Boston’s working-class children. How will you find out what’s happening? Stay tuned for our continued outreach communications, like this monthly Alumni Newsletter.

Alumni newsletters, emails (4200+) blasts, class Zoom gatherings, breakfast meetings, our EHSA website and more are planned to keep you informed. Our newsletters are popular, widely read and responded to each month with kudos to our editorial group.

If you have any ideas for our next newsletter, your feedback and input is valuable. Each month we balance what’s new with our rich history of accomplished alumni many of whose stories we uncover each month. Drop me a line or call at my contact info below.

While we are looking forward to our 200th Anniversary Gala, today we look back upon some incredible English High graduates. What do Samuel Pierpont Langley ’1850, Enoch Woodhouse ’44 and Rashid Silvera ’66 have in common? Well, they all appear in this newsletter so I won’t spoil it for you except to say you’ll find out something you did not know about all of them. Read their stories.

Finally, I would be remiss if I did not note our 200th Anniversary Fundraising Campaign is underway and we are looking for your support. Despite uncertainties all around us, one thing I know is English High Alumni will continue to give so that we can carry on our mission to support today’s English High students. Towards that end, please consider a gift today: your bequest, annual gift, required tax distributions, or cash donation will make a difference to future generations. EHSA is a 501 (C) (3) NFP so your gift is fully tax deductible.

Make your gift today and receive a special edition  ‘Proud to Be 200’ English High “E” cap. ‘Proud to Be 200’ English High E cap.

I’d also like to take a moment to recognize the passing of friends and fellow alumni. In just the last few weeks, we lost three of our best. Rev. Floyd Priester ’67, David Pickering ’67 and State Senator William Owens ’55 were cherished classmates of many.  May they all rest in peace.  Our alumni efforts will be in their memories this year.

Onward!

Mike Thomas ’67
