EHSA President’s Message: Look Where Our 200th Gala Support is Coming from . . .Everywhere!

There may still be snow on the ground in New England but English Alumni do not have cabin fever but instead are excitedly planning our 200th Gala on October 1st, 2022, in- person event. With today’s newsletter, we embark upon our eight-month push to reach out to all alumni: classmates, friends, family, neighbors…all are invited. We have all 50 states dotted with alums. Many ‘class leaders’ have already stepped up and will be scouring class lists urging fellow alums to get involved and spread the word of our 200th Anniversary.

This month we reach way back to former English High Headmasters for advice and their interesting experiences while helping to educate students as well as strengthening their opportunities for success. This two-part series  is rich with stories you’ve never heard. I hope you will be as impressed with their trusted memories as I am.

Our fundraising goals ($3MM multi-year target) are obvious but two stories in today’s Newsletter stand out:

George Alpert, Class of 1915, a founder of Brandeis University (1948) who in the midst of raising monies to establish Brandeis, lost his key supporter, Albert Einstein. This huge setback did not deter Mr. Alpert but instead he dug in for seed-money financing and received it.

Dan Eramian ’66  and all-around editor/contributor, demonstrates how simple it can be to ‘ask’ your financial organization to support your Alma Mater’s 200 years of educating Boston’s working-class families. His effort is explained for all to emulate.

Belatedly, for Black History month, we illustrate how world-renowned Allan Crite, ’29 helped change societal perception of black culture while drawing on his own life in the Boston’s South End. Years after his death, his paintings reside in museums around the world. The Alumni Association must boast we beat the Boston Globe this story. We regaled Mr. Crite’s background in 2021 by prominently placing his photo in our 200th Sponsorship Brochure as an accomplished EHS alumnus!

Finally, on the fundraising side of our world it gives the Association great hope that you, the rank-and-file alumni, will continue your support. While anticipating an influx of key sponsors for our Gala event, most of our funding will come from YOU. Last year we doubled the number of unique gifts from alums. In fact, many of those who gave for the first time, wrote checks for $200 or more…to all of you, THANKS!

This year, if you donate $100 or more, we will send you a limited edition of our ‘Proud To Be 200’ E caps, not found on E-bay!  CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS

Be well, take good care of each other.

Onward!
