EHSA President’s Message: What’s Flourishing This Spring Besides Graduating Seniors’ Aspirations?
Do you remember senior graduation day and family excitement about your next academic challenge? It’s interesting to think back to the nervousness for what came next…college, work or career choices. It was the same eagerness for some one-hundred twenty English High seniors receiving diplomas from Fenway Park, again this year. Same anticipation goes for their anxious parents waiting for their child’s name to be called. Look further in this newsletter issue for heart-warming stories of this year’s scholarship winners with plans to attend Wellesley College, Boston University and UMass Boston.

Michael Townes, Fred Dasheill and Dolphon R. Edwards, all members of the Class of 1972 were at Fenway to support grads and celebrate their own 50th class reunion.
As seniors, we thought we knew everything but, in fact, we knew very little of what the future held. For several class of 1972 alums (50th reunion classes traditionally attend graduation) the ceremonies brought back memories of how young and naïve we really were; association staffers in attendance had similar thoughts. But supporting graduation is only one way we care for our school’s seniors. But the Alumni Association does way more beyond graduation day.
This year culminates three years of planning our ‘in-person’ 200th Gala event. English High School’s 200thAnniversary is such an important event in the history of American public education, our Governor and Mayor and the entire Boston City Council have taken notice to attend.
Who can YOU tell about our 200th? Classmates, friends, and families are all invited. The point here is we need to tell everyone we know…to get the word out and COME JOIN OUR CELEBRATION!
Tickets for the October 1st Anniversary Gala are on sale as of June 20. You can also make arrangements now for reserved discounted hotel rooms for this momentous event. Much of this information can be found on our website. Click here to purchase tickets.
We need your help to pull this off. We ask all alumni to ‘stretch’ where possible, your gift-giving this year and for next two years to achieve our $3M fundraising goal. All gifts (for all you 50’s and 60’s alums your RMD’s are tax deductible!) for our 200th Anniversary Fund support Scholarships, Alumni & Friends Tutoring Center, Music & Arts Programs, Career Pathways Program
Beyond dollars, if interested in ‘getting involved’ please contact Mike or Bill at our office to help with ‘classmate calls’ to get the word out to former colleagues, fellow students, etc. You can make a difference with the alums you know who are unaware of this epic gathering.
In addition to the academic programs listed above, it’s also because of your support we were able to buy helmets for football team, provide baseballs for the baseball team and winter hats and scarfs for cheerleaders at The Game at Harvard Stadium. We all also know what the result of that funding was: EHS 66 – BLS 42!

On Friday, June 17th I was honored to be at Jose Duarte’s Retirement Dinner at Thorn Lea Country Club. We presented former the EHS head-of-school (2000-2009) with a Distinguished Service Award from the Alumni Association for his 35 years of public education. He was also presented with a commemorative EHS “Proud To Be 200” cap.

A special shout-out from one English Football QB to another. This is newly minted English Alumnus Mark Osorio ’22 who lead the 2022 English team to their record-breaking win over Latin. This fall Mark will be attending, and playing a little football at, Fitchburg State University. Welcome to the EHSA Mark and best wishes for a bright future.
