English Alumni Make an Investment in Tomorrow at EHS Alumni & Friends Tutoring Center

Alumni & Friends Tutoring Center Director, Sage Marsters (center) assists students in the tutoring center.

In 2018 EHSA received its largest single gift ever from Mr. George Mavridis, the proud son of an English High School alumnus. This generous gift established the Stella and Emmanuel Mavridis Scholarship, an ongoing program to assist English High School graduates with college expenses.

In addition to supporting scholarships, Mr. Mavridis’ gift has provided funding for the English High Alumni & Friends Tutoring Center, known as the AFTC. Now under the direction of educator Sage Marsters, the AFTC is an important resource for all English High students, especially those from recent immigrant families.

Ms. Marsters recruits, trains and coordinates a team of tutors who support learning in classrooms and work one-on-one with students on college application essays and coursework. Tutors build positive relationships with students, share learning strategies, and model learning processes. The support covers all subjects as well as helping students develop their English language skills which are so important their success. “The payoff comes in getting to see students reach that ‘Aha!’ moment when they understand a new concept or skill, or write an essay they feel proud of,” Ms. Marsters says.

A special focus of the AFTC is helping students with the college application process including their college entry essays. Here, the Center has been successful with 89% of their senior students being accepted to college.

Support from The English High School Association is vital to the ongoing success of the Center.

English alumni have a vital role to play in supporting learning and academic achievement for today’s students. In 2021 EHSA contributed over $46,000 to AFTC, funding the director’s salary and other resources. While we are proud of our support, we recognize that a greater need remains unfulfilled. This is why The Alumni & Friends Tutoring Center is one of our top priorities for fundraising in our 200th Anniversary Campaign.
