April 2021: EHSA President’s Message
Blending Tradition with New Digital English High Alumni
As we put the finishing touches on our EHS 200th Anniversary Sponsorship/Investment Catalog, I’m reminded of how far the Association and English High itself have come in recent years. At the same time, I know how far we have to go. This month we digitally shine a light on an accomplished alumna we know, Migdalia Nalls ’97 and another, How Ming Wong ’54, who left us before we could get to know him. Both from immigrant roots, these two high-achieving graduates are examples for English High students of what is possible. Fulfillment of dreams via public education of working-class families today was also true 200 years ago when The English High School first opened its doors.
Not seeming old at all, some in the class of 1959 felt contemporary having a good time on a Zoom get together last month to reminisce, tell teacher and love of English High stories. Many thanks to Jordy Warnick and Dick MacIntosh who organized this event. We hear they want to ‘zoom’ again and have, by example, paved the way for other classes too. Read more about it here.
In case you have not noticed, digital communications and emails are driving our alumni efforts these days. Perhaps you know a classmate who is not receiving emails from the Association, this newsletter being one of many since last September. Visit our website (www.englishhighalumni.org) where you can email in your alumni profile- it’s an excellent way to reconnect with old friends.. In May, keep an eye out for EHSA postcard asking for your email. As a bonus while on our website, take a gander at your senior class photo and Yearbook, most are digitally preserved there.
Finally, we are realizing our 200th Anniversary Virtual event planned for this October and live event in 2022. Our Alumni Board invites you to join our Anniversary Campaign to raise a $1 million to benefit English High School enrichment curricula, scholarships, sports and alumni programs. We need your help to get this done. Won’t you send in a gift to support your Alma Mater today? Find out more about making a gift to EHSA.
Onward!
