EHSA Scholarship Recipient Update
EHSA Scholarship Student Blanca Ramirez ’22 Begins Her College Dream at Boston University
“English High School is the place that gave me hope, determination, and the opportunity to breathe again.”

In recognition of her outstanding academic performance, Blanca Ramirez Pablo ’22, now a freshman at Boston University, was presented with the Stella and Emmanuel Mavridis Scholarship. Making the presentation was Michael Thomas, President/CEO of the EHSA
When the Guatatemala native was chosen for the award, she said, “Nim chi tzalaj tu’nj ma tx’inb’in English High School.” Then she smiled: “That’s how you say ‘I’m so happy that I attended English High’ in my native Mayan language.”
Blanca excitedly talks about her future: “I want to be part of the healthcare field no matter how difficult it is. Through the EHS Pathways program, I decided to study Health Assisting and obtained a basic understanding of medicine.”
She appreciated EHS’s diversity, noting:
“The EHS staff offers many opportunities to explore careers, gain experience, get a job or an internship. What I find wonderful is the number of people who are there to help the student. My first year, Pathways helped me with my resume, while helping me find health care internships. The Tutoring Center is a place where the power of words and voice matter. The teachers are great. Thanks to my math teacher, Ms. Martinez. And I was able to create my own club, Sociedad Unida, that is fundraising for a program in Guatemala for people with disabilities.”
Blanca offers advice to new English High students “You are not alone on your chosen path. There are people who are willing to walk with you.”

About the Stella and Emmanuel Mavridis Scholarship
The Scholarship Program was created to honor the memories of Stella and Emmanuel Mavridis, the parents of George Mavridis. Emmanuel graduated from The English High School in 1926 having immigrated from Greece as a teen-ager. Emmanuel made his way in his new city of Boston as a restaurant worker.
As a father, Emmanuel always stressed the importance of education to his son George and when George became a successful businessman, he was inspired to “give back” to his father’s alma mater, The English High School.
