EHS Alum Leads Boston Pipeline Designed to Attract Minority Students to the Transportation Industry

Aboubacar Konate ’12

Aboubacar Konate ’12, now a Structural Designer / PMCM at HDR, an engineering firm, serves as President of the Boston Chapter of COMTO, the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials.

This past summer he managed the organization’s Annual Golf Outing Scholarship Event at The William J. Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park. Robert Prince ’67, a former head of the Boston MTA and a nationally recognized public transit consultant, sponsored a foursome including Walter Turley, Frank Kelliher ’65, Bob Kelliher, and Rich Connolly ’65.

Konate said, ‘Many industry professionals, COMTO Boston members, and previous scholarship winners attended, and we were able to raise scholarship funds for future industry leaders and deserving students. The program included the announcement of awards to this year’s scholarship recipients.”

COMTO’s mission is to be the voice of equity for minorities in transportation. The organization provides a vehicle to network with industry leaders and agencies. Konate adds, “Growing the pipeline of engineers and transportation pros requires a bridge between professionals and students. We hope more people will apply who are pursuing or plan to pursue transportation careers.”

After graduation from EHS, Abou earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of New Hampshire. He is a Program Manager on the Red and Orange Line Subway System Improvement Program for the MBTA. One of his mentors is Robert Prince, a member of the EHS Board of Directors and former General Manager of the MBTA.
