EHSA Kicks Off 2024 Announcing New $50,000 Cullen Family Scholarship to Help English High Grads Realize Their College Dreams

“We and our father, Frank, Class of ’39, had a deep affection for English High. As young men, English was crucial in exposing us to social diversity and to giving us educational opportunity.  Our Cullen Family Scholarship is a way for us to show this affection and to reciprocate for all we received.”

The English High School Association, official alumni organization of the English High School, announces that a new scholarship program has been created to benefit graduating English High students.  The Cullen Family Scholarship was established by EHS alumni John Cullen ’65 and his brother Frank Cullen ’68 in memory of their father Francis T. Cullen, a member of the class of 1939.  Their $50,000 endowment gift will fund in perpetuity an annual scholarship to a college-bound EHS graduate.

“We and our father, Francis, had a deep affection for English High. As young men, English was crucial in exposing us to social diversity and to giving us educational opportunity.  Our Cullen Family Scholarship is a way for us to show this affection and to reciprocate for all we received.” The brothers add, “Annual recipients will be highly motivated students who need a bit of a financial boost to kick off their education. They will be students who love to learn and wish to make the world a better place.”

The Cullen Family Scholarship joins other ongoing scholarship programs for English High students that are funded by alumni or supporters.  They include: the Stella and Emmanuel Mavridis Scholarship established by George Mavridis in memory of his parents;  the Nollman Family Scholarship established by Myron “Mike” Nollman ’52; and the Coach Bill Stewart Jr. Scholarship originally established in 1987.

According to EHSA President Michael Thomas ’67, “2023-24 has been the year of outstanding financial support for our seniors’ college ambitions. As stated last month, we have a commitment of well over $150,000 endowed in scholarship funds ready for 2024 with more to come. This is a remarkable accomplishment given we started asking for gifts only four short years ago. More importantly, it sends the message of steadfast alumni support to all students and highlights what our efforts can produce to ensure our seniors succeed.”
