EHS Celebrated It’s 125th Anniversary in Memory of Those Lost

The English High School World War II Memorial
In 1946, shortly after the end of World War II, English High School prepared to celebrate it’s 125th Anniversary. Twenty-five years earlier, at the Centennial celebration of the school in 1921 the Alumni erected a beautiful memorial plaque in the school building to honor EHS students who had perished in World War I. In 125th committee chose to dedicate their celebration to the memory of EHS students lost in World War II.
Another beautiful memorial was planned for the school building and dedicated on May 11, 1949. At that time an additional sum of money was set aside for the publication of a memorial book — “IN MEMORIAM. WORLD WAR II. THE ENGLISH HIGH SCHOOL, BOSTON” — which it was said “would be a proud page in the history of our one hundred and twenty-five years.
In 1950, the IN MEMORIAM book was published listing 271 English High students who were lost in the war. While there are probably few copies left in existence, fortunately we can read the book digitally. It is a moving volume of 148 pages which honors the men lost as it tells an important chapter in the history of English High School

The first page of the English High School IN MEMORIAM book commemorates the 271 EHS students profiled in the book.
