Alumni Profile

Sy Gottlieb ’64

Sy is, as many EHS graduates of his class are, second generation Americans; his grandparents arriving in Boston at the turn of the 20th century in order to escape the murderous persecutions of tsarist Russia. His grandfather eventually established his first garage in downtown Boston called the “Stanhope Garage.” Sy was born in 1942, the family settled in the Brighton-Allston area and in 1957 Sy Gottlieb enrolled at EHS.

Reminiscing of his student days at EHS, Sy recalls ” I loved EHS because it was a public school but it was run as a private school with dedicated teachers who were well versed in their subject and able to inspire their students.”  The school was a magnet school drawing students from every district in the city because of its sterling reputation as a non-exam school.

Upon graduation, Sy enrolled at the University of Florida where he earned a degree in business administration and returning to Boston, took additional courses at Bentley University. Joining the family business, Sy eventually built up his business to where he now owns twenty garages throughout the city including two near Fenway Park. A lifelong bachelor, Sy has been a major financial contributor to our school. He is truly a man of honor and achievement.
