Established in 1853, The English High School Association is a devoted group of graduates and supporters including faculty, family members and community leaders who are working hard to create advancement opportunities for EHS students today.

Our Mission:  To honor the history, pride, and traditions of The English High School by building a legacy that supports and inspires students in their educational pursuits and celebrates distinguished alumni achievement.

Our Vision: To ensure every English High School student is afforded quality academic instruction, resources, and support necessary to achieve their full potential to lead with honor, achievement, and service to humankind.

  • Gregory D. Hayes
    Class of ’67
    Chairman

    Greg has held various positions with companies in a Human Resources capacity and as a founder of several small businesses. Projects included contracts with: The Department of Defense (Defense Finance & Accounting Services), Mass DOT (Snow & Ice Removal Systems utilizing early GPS/AVL/GIS technologies), MBTA (LED Display Technologies and Operations Command & Control Center Design) , and the Department of Homeland Security (Mass. Interoperability Communications for First Responders and First Receivers). He currently is a National Consultant for National Media Spots, a media consulting firm, based in Framingham, MA

    These business and community experiences, combined with his earlier counseling positions in Human Relations, has molded him into a detailed yet compassionate individual. Possessing excellent interpersonal communication skills, he has a reputation of always coming through on both business and personal commitments.

    As a single father of three boys, Greg is committed to the youth of America and supporting initiatives to improve their success in life.

  • Wayne Lucas
    Class of ’68

    Treasurer

    As a native of Boston, MA, Wayne grew up going to schools in the Boston School system.  The years he spent at Boston English High were the turning point and foundation of his life.  Reflecting over the years of life experiences and challenges, he realized that his life has been centered around family, education, sports, giving back and contributing to others through is work life, hobbies and activities.

    Wayne was a lettered-member of the varsity cross-country and track teams, being team captains in his junior and senior years.  He attended University of Massachusetts in Amherst, where he received a BA in American History.  Throughout Wayne’s college years, he continued his passion for sports by being a member of the UMass Amherst cross-country and track teams.

    Wayne taught American History for one year in the Boston Public School system before being hired by the United States Postal Service (USPS).  He retired from the USPS after 33 years.  During his professional work life up to today, Wayne has volunteered with organizations such as Big Brothers Program, Boston Neighborhood Basketball League, The Big Brothers of the Elderly, to name a few.

    In Wayne’s retired life, unfortunately, he cannot run track, but he continues to work in the sports world by being a member of various sports official organizations, (EMUBA, IAABO, EMWLUA and BSB).  He is honored for the consideration to be on the Boston English High Alumni Board.  Staying involved, staying active and giving to others is Wayne’s life-time motto.

  • Thomas A. Conners
    Class of ’68
    Director

    A native of Dorchester, Tom enrolled as a commuting student at Boston College following graduation from English High. He received a B.A. degree, magna cum laude, in political science in 1972 and later a J.D. degree from its Law School. Following graduation, he conducted a general legal practice in Dorchester for eighteen years, specializing in criminal trial work. The Boston Bar Association presented him its Thurgood Marshall Award for public service in providing trial advocacy to indigent criminal defendants in Suffolk County.

    In 1995, he was appointed by Governor William Weld as a judge in the District Court, where he served in numerous Courts in the Boston area. In 2004, he was named and confirmed as a justice of the Superior Court, serving for sixteen years and sitting primarily in Boston and Dedham. He served as Regional Administrative Justice for Norfolk County for the six years prior to his retirement in 2020. He was recognized by that County’s Bar Association as Person of the Year in 2019. During his years as a judge, he returned to Boston College Law School to teach as a member of its adjunct faculty, and he also lectured at many Trial Court judicial trainings.

    Tom and his wife Kathleen, reside in Medfield, where he is a member of the Town’s Historical Commission. During his years as a trial judge, Tom returned several times to speak to English High students. He is very pleased in retirement to be more active in assisting our school as a member of the Alumni Board and as an advisor to the Pathways Program’s Law and Protective Services component. 

  • Joseph Carter
    Class of ’72

    Director

    Appointed The Adjutant General, Massachusetts National Guard by Governor Deval Patrick on September 21, 2007 (retired September 24, 2012), Brigadier General Carter oversaw the administration and operation of the Massachusetts Army and Air National Guard, responsible for the readiness, welfare, safety, training, discipline and morale of 8,300 soldiers and airmen, and the administration of a federal budget in excess of $300 million and a state budget in excess of $10 million. Brigadier General Carter entered the Massachusetts Army National Guard in 1974 and during his thirty-eight year military career in the U.S. Army Reserves and Massachusetts Army National Guard, he has served in a number of positions, including Assistant Adjutant General, Commander, Camp Edwards Army National Guard Training Site; J-5 (Strategic Plans & International Affairs); and Division Chief of Intelligence and Security (I & S). Before assuming his duties as The Adjutant General, Brigadier General Carter served as the Chief of Police of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Transit Police Department from 2003 to 2007. As Chief, he had management responsibility for provision of public safety on the Authority’s public transportation network within 175 cities and towns.  During his tenure, the Department successfully met the requirements for national accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). From 1998 to 2003, Brigadier General Carter served as the Chief of Police in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts for nearly five years. During his tenure, he oversaw the transition of the department to a problem-solving oriented policing philosophy, achieved state and national accreditation, and implemented numerous distinguished programs to modernize strategic components of its operation.

    Brigadier General Carter began his police career in January 1978 with the Boston Police Department, where he served with distinction for twenty years. His work in civil rights investigations and neighborhood crime watch received national acclaim and served as a national model for other agencies. He retired from the department in 1998 while serving as Superintendent of Police, a rank he held for thirteen years.

    From 2006 to 2007, Brigadier General Carter was the president of the 21,000-member International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), the world’s largest professional organization of police executives. From 2009 until his retirement in 2012, Brigadier General Carter served as the secretary and member of the executive committee of the Adjutants General Association of the United States (AGAUS), which consists of the fifty-four Adjutants General of the sovereign States, Territories and the District of Columbia. Brigadier General Carter possesses a Master of Arts degree in criminal justice administration from Atlanta University and a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. He is a graduate of the National Security Studies Course at the Maxwell School at Syracuse University where he received certification as National Security Management Fellow. He has received the professional designation of Certified in Homeland Security – awarded Diplomate Status by the American College of Forensic Examiners International, Inc. He also is a life member of the IACP, the Association of the First Corps of Cadets, the Association of the U.S. Army and the NAACP, and has received numerous commendations and honors for professional, military and civic achievement. He is an active board member of numerous non-profit agencies in greater Boston and on Martha’s Vineyard.

  •  Caitlin Murphy
    Head of School, The English High School
    Honorary Vice President

    Caitlin Murphy is the Head of School of The English High School. Murphy has been a member of the faculty for fifteen years, serving in prior roles as a history teacher, History Department Head, Instructional Coach, and Assistant Principal. She was a semi-finalist for Massachusetts Teacher of the Year in 2016.

    She is a magna cum laude graduate of Boston College and holds Masters Degrees in History and Education from Brown University and the University of Massachusetts, Boston, respectively. She is a doctoral candidate at the University of Massachusetts Boston in the Urban Education and Leadership Department.

    Stephen retired from banking in 2003 and opened his own business in numismatics (the study and sale of ancient Greek and Roman coins). He is an active member of AIPAC (The American Israel Political Action Committee) whereby he writes position papers on Israel that explains our position to Congress.

    Stephen has been a member of the EHSA Board of Directors since 2010.

  • Allan Kiser
    Class of ’82

    Director

    Allan Kiser, is a Vice President at Fidelity Investments where he serves as the Compliance Officer and leads the Compliance Program for Fidelity Personal Trust Company.  Allan’s portfolio also includes leading the Internal Controls Program for Fidelity Brokerage Services, LLC.  Prior to joining Fidelity, he was the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Compliance Officer at Marketfield Asset Management, a boutique investment advisory firm, based in Manhattan, New York.

    Allan’s prior experience includes serving as Senior Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer at Atlantic Trust Private Wealth Management, and Executive Director and Divisional Chief Compliance Officer for UBS Financial Services both in metropolitan New York City.

    At UBS, he chaired the Legal and Compliance Division’s ERG/Mentoring Program and Co-Chaired the Legal and Compliance Division’s Diversity Program. Through these initiatives, Allan worked to create a vibrant pipeline of highly qualified and culturally competent legal and compliance professionals for future leadership roles. Earlier in his career, Allan was an Examiner in the Enforcement Division, at the National Association of Securities Dealers (now FINRA) in Washington, DC.

    He is a proud graduate of UMass Boston where he earned his degree during the evening while working full-time. In September of 2017, Allan joined the Board of Directors of Boston English High School.  He was honored to be the commencement speaker for EHS in 2006, and was honored again in 2018 to address the graduates, as the Alumni speaker during the Commencement Ceremonies.

    At Fidelity, Allan serves as an Advisor to Aspire – Fidelity’s African-American and Latino Employee Resource Group whose mission includes, fostering the professional and personal development of its members. In addition, Allan serves on the Advisory Committee of the Becoming A Man – Youth Guidance (Boston). Allan resides in metropolitan Boston with his wife of more than 30 years, Rita.

  • Enoch Woodhouse II
    Class of ’44

    Director

    Enoch Woodhouse II, Class of ’44, was born in Roxbury, MA.   In 1944 at the age of 17, he enlisted in the US Army. He attended Office Candidate School (OCS) and was commissioned 2nd Lt. at age 19. He was assigned to the 332nd Fighter Group known as the Tuskeegee Airmen, as Paymaster. Woodhouse and the Tuskegee Airmen played a critical role in the early integration of the Armed Forces.

    After retiring from the US Army Air Force, Woodhouse attended and graduated from Yale University. He then studied law at Yale Law School and at Boston University, receiving his JD from the latter in ‘55.  He worked as a trial lawyer in Boston for over 40 years, and in the State Department and for the City of Boston as well.

    Among his many awards, in 2007 he, along with 300 of his fellow Tuskegee Airmen, received the Congressional Gold Medal, one of our nation’s highest honors from President George W. Bush and Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.

  • John J. Talbot
    Class of ’68

    Director & Trustee

    John Talbot resides in Canton, MA with his wife Anne, were they have lived for over 30 years raising three children, Tara, Rachel and Sean and now with 2 grandchildren Teddy and Annabel. Following graduation from EHS John went on to Boston College and studied Accounting, Finance and Business Administration.  John began his career with Arthur Andersen, an international CPA firm.  He held senior positions with National Medical Care, Children’s Hospital Boston, then a consulting role with Temple Barker & Sloane of Lexington, MA.

    In the mid 90’s John founded and developed the first medical home care model company in the U.S., Pathways Healthcare.  Pathways brings physicians and nurse practitioners along with a fully integrated disciplinary team to the home. The medical home model is designed to offer patients a choice of either going to a nursing home for post-acute medical rehabilitation or receive the same level of care in the safety and comfort of their own home. Pathways Healthcare is now in multiple states across the northeast and continues to grow each year.  One of John’s greatest joys of founding Pathways has been working with his son, Sean, Chief Operating and Information System Officer.

    Hobbies for John include family vacations, travel and golf.  John is a member at the Blue Hills Country Club in Canton, MA. The last few years his major hobby has been being a part of the Alumni Association of EHS. The association provides enormous satisfaction and gratification working with students, faculty and alumni.  Try it, you will love it!

    While attending EHS John played football, baseball and was a member of the debate and band teams.  John owes so much to EHS, especially the faculty and coaches who prepared him for his professional and personal life.

  • Henry A. Russell
    Class of ’61

    Director

    Mr. Russell Is Mott MacDonald’s Program Manager for the rehabilitation of tunnels.  Since 2001 he has been the chairman of the International Tunneling Association’s Working Group 6 Repair and Maintenance of Tunnels, he is a member of the MOLES, Chairman of AUCA/SME Committee on Tunnel Rehabilitation and has over 50 years of experience in the inspection, and rehabilitation or underground structures, including over of 70 tunnels in the U.S. and overseas.

    Mr. Russell has had numerous projects that have won national awards for excellence including; The International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI) Outstanding Transportation Project in 1993 and 2005, and the American Shotcrete Association’s underground project of the year in 2005, 2007. Mr. Russell has authored over 40 professional papers on the design and rehabilitation of underground structures, including the rehabilitation chapters, of the Tunnel Engineering Handbook, 1998, FHWA-AASHTO T-20 Training Manual. 2009, and FHWA’s Technical Manual for Design and Construction of Road tunnels –Civil Elements 2010.

    Mr. Russell is a Vice President and Principal Tunnel Engineer at Mott MacDonald and is National Program Leader for the rehabilitation of underground structures.

    Henry is a 1961 graduate of English High School and a member of the Board of Director since 2011.

  • Michael F. Thomas
    Class of ’67
    President

    Mike grew up in Allston and West Roxbury areas of Boston. The sixth of eight boys in a ‘blue collar’ Thomas family, Mike was the first in the family to graduate from college, after Boston English High School and post- graduate year at prep school.

    Timing is everything in life and so it was for Mike as he was fortunate to have Coach Bill Stewart as coach/mentor/advisor as well as other English High teachers to help him gain admittance to Phillips Academy at Andover. Educational and sports team experiences at both secondary schools, have shaped and stayed with him for life.

    After college, a myriad of careers led Mike from public service in Boston Mayor White’s office to sales/marketing positions in consumer-goods Marketing. Mike built his own home in Westchester County in 1983 where he founded Thomas Associates, a boutique marketing consulting firm.

    Relocating back to Boston area in 2002, he became involved with EHSAA; after 15 years in mortgage industry, is recently retired.  He is currently President of English High School Alumni Association and has been for 10 years. Mike lives in Walpole, MA with his partner, Denise Capozzoli and her son, William.
